San Diego County Office of Education

In 2021, the San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE) received a California Community Schools Partnership Program (CCSPP) grant that allocated Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) funding for its Juvenile Court and Community Schools (JCCS).

To tell San Diego COE’s story, this case study reviews data collected through a site visit and relevant documentation. As part of the site visit, WestEd conducted focus groups with county office leadership, school social workers, members of the Student and Family Engagement (SAFE) team, and community arts partners. In addition, a student ambassador provided a tour of Lindsay Community School, one of the JCCS school sites. The CCSPP grant enabled SDCOE to strengthen its integrated student supports by hiring full-time behavioral health staff and providing expanded and enriched learning opportunities through arts partnerships and programming as well as expanding career pathway offerings. Grant funding also bolstered active family and community engagement by supporting the SAFE team.
